POSITION: School Social Worker

Job Function: School social workers assist students with academic learning by providing strategic services that identify and address the social-emotional-environmental issues that interfere with the educational process. Working with parents/guardians, teachers, school principal/principal's designee, and community-based resources, the school social worker implements strategies that promote students' positive school adjustment. Each social worker is assigned to the school(s) based upon identified needs of the student population. School social workers also serve as a member of the Child Study Team, assess the needs of children and support the district's instructional program by assisting students in their personal, social and educational growth consistent with the goals and mission set forth by LEAP Academy University Charter School.

QUALIFICATIONS:
  1. Holds or is eligible for N.J. DOE School Social Worker Certificate.
  2. At least five years experience in school counseling preferred.
  3. Master's degree in Social Work (MSW) from an accredited institution.
  4. Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Board may find appropriate and acceptable.
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Serves as the MSW professional staff charged with the provision of specialized mental health counseling and individualized behavioral health interventions for children and families at LEAP Academy. This position coordinates all activities with the Director of Student Support and/or Lead Person and/or Chief Academic Officer of the LEAP Academy and contributes to the school's student support services team.

REPORTS TO: Director of Student Support Services


ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
  1. Case Management and Monitoring:

    a. Provides comprehensive case management for students and families K-12 including:
  • Case intake and management
  • Development and monitoring of individual family/student treatment plans
  • Coordination of referral for on-site and off-site services based on needs and goals
  • Provision of service planning, resource development, family liaison and support, referrals and recordkeeping.
  • Coordination of nutrition and other wellness programs for LEAP students.
  • Coordination with LEAP staff.
b. Collaborates with teaching and support staff in developing and implementing classroom and school practices that will support the child's emotional, physical and education needs.

c. Collaborating with the Family Support Center and Wellness Center team to include graduate, undergraduate students and staff involved with case management process.

d. Maintains working knowledge of and liaison with community agencies and resources for purposes of referrals and service availability.

e. Maintain records, statistics, and evaluation data in accordance with school, university, state and federal policy.

f. Perform and assist in the development of monthly, quarterly, and annual reports

g. Plan, participate in, and lead meetings as appropriate.

2.) Direct Clinical Services:

a. Supervises a range of direct clinical services to children/youth from K-12 who are exhibiting mild to serious emotional/behavioral disorders and their families and caregivers, including:
  • Bio-psycho-social diagnostic assessments;
  • Development and monitoring of treatment and behavioral plans;
  • Individual, family, and/or group therapy to children/youth and their families.
  • Counseling/support/education interventions.
b. Supervises direct supervision to graduate, undergraduate students and staff involved with clinical programs.

c. Secures external mental health providers as needed and monitors work as part of the case management process; and collaborates with the Special Education Coordinator for LEAP Academy and other mental health personnel to ensure collaboration and avoid effort duplication.

d. Provides technical assistance and consultation to the LEAP Academy on topics related to mental health such as handling stress, depression, child abuse, staying safe, suicide, sexual orientation, loss/grief and others, including education and training programs for parents, personnel and students, as well as coaching, modeling and mentoring for teachers and staff exhibiting difficulties in addressing behavioral issues.

Additional Duties

Performs other duties as deemed necessary by Director of Student Support Services and/or Lead Person.

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: Twelve month contracted position, Salary, hours & work year to be determined by Board in consultation with Lead Person.

EVALUATION: Annually according to state statute and rule and Board policy.

SALARY GRADE/RANGE:

STATUS : Exempt

BENEFITS: Benefits are available to full time employees per Board policy.
