Position Summary
The Advanced Practice Provider (APP) will coordinate and provide comprehensive care for neurosurgery patients, performing diagnostic and therapeutic procedures, and overseeing discharge planning. The APP collaborates with the clinical team, leads patient assessments, educates residents, and participates in research and quality improvement initiatives.
Minimum Qualifications – Nurse Practitioner
- Graduate of a CCNE accredited nursing program with a Master’s Degree in Nursing.
- National Certification by one of the recognized APRN Certification Centers.
- Licensure or eligibility for licensure as a Registered Nurse and Advanced Practice Registered Nurse in West Virginia.
- American Heart Association BLS Certification required; Advanced Life Support training at department discretion.
Experience – Nurse Practitioner
- Acute care or neurosurgery experience preferred.
- Eligible new graduates will be considered.
Preferred Qualifications – Nurse Practitioner
- APRNs requesting RNFA privileges must complete an RNFA certificate program and pass the RNFA exam.
Minimum Qualifications – Physician Assistant
- Bachelor’s Degree as Physician Assistant or Master’s Degree as Physician Assistant required.
- Graduate of an ARC-PA approved Physician Assistant training program.
- Certification by the National Commission for Certification of Physician Assistants.
- Licensed or eligible for licensure by the WV Board of Medicine or WV Board of Osteopathic Medicine.
- American Heart Association BLS Certification required; Advanced Life Support training at department discretion.
Experience – Physician Assistant
- Acute care or neurosurgery experience preferred.
- Eligible new graduates will be considered.
Preferred Qualifications – Physician Assistant
- Master’s level degree as Physician Assistant preferred.
Core Duties and Responsibilities
- Manage comprehensive and individualized care for neurosurgery patients and families in inpatient, post-discharge, and ambulatory settings.
- Complete daily rounds, consults, pre-procedure evaluations, and ongoing follow-up.
- Perform integrated assessments and order additional tests or consults as appropriate.
- Conduct diagnostic tests, communicate results, and document findings in the medical record.
- Coordinate patient discharge, ensuring appropriate services and outpatient follow-up.
- Develop individualized care plans, including teaching and referral coordination.
- Recognize unstable or complex cases and initiate proper interventions.
- Recognize emergency situations and initiate effective emergency care.
- Serve as a coordinator for follow-up procedures and tests in the ambulatory setting.
- Assist in outcome measurement collection and analysis.
- Participate in critical thinking, diagnostic reasoning, and clinical decision making.
- Utilize equipment safely.
- Apply scientific principles, standards of care, and research findings in practice.
- Employ teaching strategies for staff, students, patients, families, and the community.
- Promote learning environments responsive to patient and family preferences.
- Maintain up-to-date knowledge through ongoing education.
- Complete all assigned clinical competencies.
- Act as a resource for staff caring for neurosurgery patients.
- Provide educational programs to professional and paraprofessional personnel.
- Participate in community outreach and literature distribution.
- Document care plans, interventions, and evaluations clearly in the patient’s record.
- Collaborate with leadership to achieve patient outcome improvements.
- Lead implementation of practice changes that positively impact patient outcomes.
- Work collaboratively with medical and nursing staff for problem solving.
- Participate in interdisciplinary approaches to patient care, program development, and education.
- Promote innovation in expanded roles for neurosurgery patient care.
- Lead or participate in committees and task forces.
- Document work hours and submit billing reports.
- Analyze neurosurgery data from registries, reports, and benchmarks to recommend improvements.
- Participate in clinical trials and research studies.
- Assist faculty, administrators, and directors with outcome measures collection.
- Perform additional duties and projects as assigned.
Physical and Working Conditions
